What to Wear for Your Headshot Session

Your headshot should reflect your personality, your style, and the way you want to be seen. These are suggestions, not rules — use what feels right and true to your personal style.

Traditionally Masculine Styles

  1. Slim-fit shirts/jackets look sharper than boxy cuts

  2. Stick to solids; patterned ties are fine

  3. Bring: one light, one dark, one pop of color (eye-enhancing tones work great)

  4. A jacket or v-neck sweater adds polish

  5. For casual looks, go long-sleeve henley or rolled button-up (better than a t-shirt)

  6. Collared shirt + blazer = timeless. Tie optional, depending on formality

  7. Coordinate pants/jeans with tops (¾ shots often include hips/knees)

  8. Bring polished shoes + socks (just in case)

  9. Accessories: glasses, cufflinks, watch, rings

  10. Nails trimmed & clean — hands may appear in some portraits

Traditionally Feminine Styles

  1. Tailored/figure-hugging cuts photograph best

  2. Textures (lace, knits, ruching) add interest; stick to solids over prints

  3. Bring: one light, one dark, one bold color (complements eyes/skin tone)

  4. Blazers/cardigans slim arms & add polish

  5. ¾ or long sleeves flatter most; sleeveless works with toned arms or under layers. Cap sleeves tend to be less forgiving.

  6. Skirts or pants that pair with your tops (¾ shots often include hips/knees)

  7. Necklines: v-neck, scoop, or cowl elongate the neck; avoid high necks

  8. Jewelry: subtle or bold is fine — just don’t let it overpower your face

  9. Neutral polish, French, or simple buff for nails

  10. Strapless/seamless undergarments help avoid visible straps or lines
